Rebuilding Relationships

There has been a decline in the number and participation of members in school’s SLC/SLT/SRC(s) within the school division. With that comes many issues regarding how we can get more involvement, participation, and members within each school. Here are some ideas we came up with alongside data from a survey we did about rebuilding and organizing a SLC/SLT/SRC.

DIFFERENT MODELS OF LEADERSHIP

Leadership can be shown in many different styles and can be down in many ways. Some common types of leadership you can find in a school setting can be transactional leadership which is where the leaders create a clear and straightforward online of the structure and requirements, transformational leadership which is where a leader works lead people through enthusiasm, energy, and having a vision for the future, laissez-faire leadership which is where the leader has a very minimal say in decisions which allows others to make their own decisions, etc. Leadership can be shown in many ways and can work differently depending on the leader. Though in an SLC/SLT/SRC there can be multiple different leaders such as:

YOU NEED ...

the confident and brave people to be the front center stage people.

the tech-savvy people who make awesome TV/Social media posts.

the artsy people who make all the best posters, backgrounds, game cards, and all the more fun hand-made things.

the hardworking people who start and stay till the finish.

the creative ideas people who have all the awesome ideas.

LEADERSHIP SELECTION TIPS

  • Promoting SLC’s by getting students more excited and getting the school engaged.

  • Less teacher voice and more student voice.

  • Making sure everyone feels welcomed and heard.

  • Having an activity step up by the SLC and teachers for the SLC and students after school that has games and activities that the students want to participate in.

  • Be more informative of the SLC process (Give examples of things).

  • Allow students vote on presidents and/or official members.

  • Have more engaging activities so more people will want to help plan them.

  • Figure out a time to have them as many kids don’t want to use up their lunch period and others can't be there after or before school.

  • Do more than just planning activities/spirit days; i.e., do fun activities like icebreakers.

  • Make it so all SLC kids if available that day must go to the Conference and share what it was like at an assembly.

  • Figure out a good structure that can work for the school.

  • If someone is missing don’t appoint them to something no one else volunteered for.

  • Get people committed to the SLC and participate in the meetings.

  • Get the WHOLE school involved in bigger activities such as gym blasts - be inclusive.

  • Make group norms and rules.

  • If someone is missing don’t appoint them to something no one else volunteered for.

  • Be more welcoming!
